Link in Bio: How to Track Clicks from Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube
A link in bio is the clickable web address on a social profile. On Instagram and TikTok, a normal post often cannot hold a live link. The profile link is the door off the app. On YouTube, people also click links under the channel and under each video. If that door is one long, messy URL, you cannot tell a bio tap from a story tap. A short tracking link can.

How big is the audience behind the bio?

DataReportal's Digital 2026 report shares what online adults said they used in the past month. In the Q2 2025 survey:
  • Facebook: 56.9%
  • YouTube: 55.4%
  • Instagram: 55.1%
  • WhatsApp: 54%
  • Messenger: 38.4%
  • TikTok: 36%
The TikTok figure leaves out China, where the sister app Douyin is counted separately. YouTube is measured in a different part of the survey, so it is close to Facebook but not in the exact same list. People also hop between apps. The same research says online adults use an average of 6.75 social platforms each month. Your bio link is one door among many. That is why the click count matters more than the follower count. A 2022 Sprout Social study of 47,579 public Instagram profiles found that profiles using their link in bio tool had 17% higher average daily profile engagement. The study is a few years old, and it describes their tool, not every bio link. The plain lesson still holds: a clear profile link is part of a healthy profile. The study is here: Sprout Social on link in bio tools. One analytics vendor, Flick, reported an Instagram click-through rate of 4.57% in January 2025 across 4,365 accounts. They divide website or email clicks by profile views. That is one vendor's number, not a law. Your own tracked link is the number to trust. Some tools build a mini page of buttons. That helps when you have a video, a shop, and a newsletter at the same time. It also adds a step. The person taps the bio, then taps again. If you only need one next step, put a short link straight in the bio. Fewer taps, and every tap is counted. If you do use a button page, put a different short link on each button. Then you know whether people wanted the shop or the newsletter. Platform guides on this site:
  1. Pick one page that matches what you are promoting this week.
  2. Create a short link for the bio. Create a second one if a story or a video description should be counted apart from the bio.
  3. Paste the short link into the profile. Say what it is. "New video" beats "my links".
  4. Mention the link in the post or the video. People do not hunt for it.
  5. Check visits after a day, then after a week.
A QR code on a video end screen can catch people watching on a TV. QR code statistics show that scanning is already a monthly habit for about half of adult internet users.

What to look at after the click

Follower count does not pay the bills. Profile views are better. Bio clicks are better still. In the link dashboard, compare:
  • The bio link, the story link, and the video description link
  • Phone versus desktop. Bio traffic is mostly phones.
  • Country, if you sell in more than one place
  • Time of day, so you know when to remind people
Click-through rate benchmarks help you see whether a bio is doing more work than an ad or an email. Viso.li is a link shortener. It is not a full bio page builder. That is a good fit when you want one clean, tracked URL in the profile. Create it, paste it, and read the clicks. The free plan includes 10 links a month, QR codes, and basic analytics.

A one-week test

Pick one offer. Make three short links that all go to the same page:
  • viso.li/bio for the profile
  • viso.li/story for the story or a pinned post
  • viso.li/video for the YouTube description
After seven days you might see 80 bio visits, 30 story visits, and 120 video visits. The video description is the winner this week, even if Instagram has more followers. Next week, repeat the video style and change the weak story. Follower count would have told you the wrong winner. Separate links tell you the right one.

Which apps people actually open

Survey answers and phone use are not the same thing. In the Digital 2026 report, Similarweb's app data ranks YouTube first. WhatsApp is next, at an index of 86.5 compared with YouTube's 100. Instagram is 79.9. Facebook is 77.1. YouTube has almost 50% more monthly active app users than TikTok in that data set. That is why a YouTube description link can beat a louder TikTok bio. Measure the click, not the hype.
